Student Profiles

Kelly Altenhofen

M.S. – Geography – South Dakota State University
B.A. – Geography and Russian Area Studies – University of Montana

Stephen Bieda, III

M.S. – Atmospheric Sciences – The University of Arizona

B.S. – Atmospheric Sciences – The University of Arizona

Research Interests:

Climatological assessment of, and risk adaptation to, the North American Monsoon System (NAMS).  The NAMS provides between 30% to 70% of annual rainfall in the semi-arid regions of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico.  With these beneficial rains comes the risk for lightning-sparked wildfires, damaging microburst winds and life threatening floods.  The geography of the affected NAMS region is complicated, and the warning time necessary to prevent risk to life and property is unfortunately quite short.  My research will focus on assessing the severe weather threats through synoptic climatological studies, and documenting how emergency management officials and the governments of the affected regions can provide valuable information to the public for risk mitigation

Nelson Cronyn

M.S. – Range Science/Economics - Utah State University

B.S. – Biology/Plant Physiology – University of California at Davis

Research Interests:

M.S. – Water Resources, Hydrogeology, Physics, and Chemistry - University of Grenoble, France

B.S. – Mobilisation and Management of Territorial Water Resources - University of Nouakchott, Mauritania

Objectives:

The overall objective of my research is to better understand the impact of climate variability on the processes of environmental degradation in the Sahel in Senegal, Mauritania, and Mali. Specifically, my research will analyze the relationships between changes in land use, socio-economic activities, and health and migration of both livestock and human populations. Emphasis will be placed on the hydrology of surface runoff, and on access to water resources.

Specifics Objectives:

  • Modelling hydrological Sahelian basins
The study aims to monitor specific changes in the environment (surface conditions) due to human and climatic impacts, and how to account for environmental changes in modelling hydrological Sahelian basins.
  • Distribution of vector-borne diseases
Many climatic and other associated environmental factors, such as soil, vegetation, orohydrography, geomorphology, hydrogeology, agriculture, population, and wildlife, will be tested to try to explain the distribution of vector-borne diseases.

Wiebke Foerch

B.S. – Agriculture - University of Reading, United Kingdom

Research Interests:

Main research interests are in international development related topics
with a regional focus on Sub-Saharan Africa (mainly Horn of Africa, East
Africa). Within the context of sustainable development, she wants to place
emphasis on the sustainable management of arid/semi-arid environments and their natural resources to meet the needs of its population presently and in future.  Her main areas of interest include food security, vulnerability and adaptation within a livelihoods framework. Research areas she is interested in include human-environment interactions, land use change, resource and watershed management, as well as global change.

Joanne Gallaher

M.P. – Resource Management Planning - University of Minnesota

B.L.A. – Landscape Architecture - Mississippi State University

Research Interests:

I am interested in the potential contribution of ecotourism, a common development strategy in developing countries, to the sustainability of protected areas in arid and semiarid environments. In the context of global environmental change, reconciliation of economic development and conservation becomes increasingly challenging. These pressures are heightened in developing countries, where short-term economic needs may override long-term environmental concerns, a scenario that often results in deforestation and species loss in the world’s most fragile ecosystems. At risk are ecotourism destinations themselves – protected natural areas – as well as the character and resilience of communities that host tourists arriving in record numbers.
